Why Mother’s Day is particularly relevant to say thank you this year

The role of a Mother often means being an expert ‘juggler’ of different jobs. The household tasks of washing, cleaning & feeding run alongside other day to day activities of getting children to/from school. But many mothers also have an additional day job & during Covid when the schools shut, mothers often faced the additional role of home schooling. So the juggling took on even more of a circus act!

It’s in these circumstances that Mother’s Day is all the more relevant - as a thank you for working so hard to keep the ‘show on the road’ at home. And this is where history is relevant, as the day originally started to be commemorated in the UK in the Middle Ages around the area of work. But it was children, often girls as young as 10 years old, who were already working away from home, who celebrated Mothering Sunday by returning to their ‘Mother’ or home church in the middle Sunday of Lent, and thereby could bring flowers to their own Mothers at the same time to say thank you

The power of thanks is enormous. These days Mothering Sunday is still celebrated according to the religious calendar on the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter, but it’s become very commercial - and big business is made out of the many gifts on sale to celebrate this festive time. No longer is it just flowers like violets from the hedgerows, but people splash out on cards & varied presents too.

Words do mean an awful lot though, and this is where a personalised gift really does have meaning. Just a simple “I love you Mum” on a mug underlines the appreciation from child to mother. And not an expensive gift either at £4 per item.

The role of the Mother is of course at the heart of the family. Naturally it’s not just children who want to show appreciation on Mother’s Day. The husband or partner of the Mother often shows their thanks with gifts and cards. It may be that they specifically decide to design your own baby grow beautifully inscribed with “1st Mother’s Day” on it using a big heart design.

Alternatively jokey presents work well - “Mum, Queen of the Kitchen” on a design your own apron acknowledges the role many mothers have in providing delicious meals day in day out and the time & effort that takes.

Alternatively the tradition of baking buns is wrapped around Mother’s Day through history. This idea reflects the day’s relationship with the story of the Feeding of the Five Thousand and the reprieve from fasting. In Bristol, and some other parts of the world , mothering buns remain a speciality for Mothering Sunday - ‘plain, yeast-leavened buns, iced, and sprinkled with hundreds & thousands, eaten for breakfast on that day.’ Here’s a recipe - www.thesimplethings.com/blog/2015/3/11/recipe-mothering-buns but if you fancy a more exotic and delicious traditional cake then Simnel Cake is especially associated with both Mothering Sunday & Easter. One of the best recipes to go for can be found via www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/easter-simnel-cake

The oh so tough effects of Covid are that Mothers being just ‘there’ whether nearby or remotely has taken its toll with this disease meaning many Mothers have become ill & passed away due to the pandemic. This of course happens anyway due to the normal cycle of life & death but is all the more poignant if the demise of someone close like a Mother happens due to a highly abnormal event such as this fiercely contagious disease. Thank goodness for the roll out of vaccines , something to be celebrated at any time of year as well as Mothering Sunday itself.
