It’s a famous scene from the cult movie, "Bridget Jones’s Diary" all about the story of singleton Bridget haphazardly finding love. When Bridget Jones encounters Mark Darcy at a New Year’s drinks party - she has a smile on her face as their eyes meet, but then she glances down to see his Christmas jumper... and with a huge goofy moose or reindeer on the front, it was loose fitting and seemingly unsexy. But who knew, his distinct Christmas jumper, despite her earlier concern, was part of the man she fell in love with later in the film.
To date, Bridget (a Brit cleverly portrayed by US actress Renee Zellweger) in her thirties, was the one who we’d seen with daily struggles with her weight, her overindulgence in alcohol and cigarettes and career challenges. Her mother was doting but overconfident, and constantly trying to marry Bridget off to a rich, handsome man.
In walks posh human-rights barrister Mark Darcy (aka Colin Firth) and yet it’s he, the old fashioned toff, who’s wearing the ridiculous jumper. So the Christmas jumper has endless possibilities - even if it’s in bad taste. In fact in Bridget’s case, you could say that in a way Darcy’s jumper broke the ice between them.
The film’s director Sharon Maguire, re-introduced the jumper in a flashback during a sequel "Bridget Jones' Baby", and says all along there was great debate about the cosmically-bad sweater choice when Bridget met Darcy.
"The original sweater went through many designs because it had to be just right. The character of Mr. Darcy is a constipated English prig when we first meet him so we needed something totally ridiculous to pierce that pomposity. And for some reason neither Santas nor Xmas trees nor Snowmen worked as well as that red-nosed moose or reindeer we chose. It also had to look home-knit, something his mother knitted for him."
A personalised Christmas jumper has huge appeal especially as a way of being inclusive around the festive period. The whole gathering at Christmas or New Year could don a memorable jumper or sweatshirt showing where you are and who’s present. There’s also the option of a baseball sweatshirt which means you’ve already got a garment with two colours before you start. Alternatively a hoodie works during this cold phase or a tshirt if you have good circulation!
There is endless scope to get creative. Choose a popular charming layout with Father Christmas, a Christmas Tree or Snowflake incorporating your own words. Traditional garment colours for this season tend to be either red or green but there is a large range of colours to choose from. Lighter colours for text work well as does uploading photos. Also there are endless possibilities with the fonts - do you want to stay trad or get swirly & curly with italic ?
Designing your own Christmas jumper can also be unifying at work. The office party comes to mind or otherwise a festive ‘dress down Friday’ garment. If you’re working from home, it could be the only time you ‘dress up!’ Whichever way, the Christmas jumper represents a bit of festive fun, with its popularity seemingly never ending.
